Confirming whether a material contains asbestos

Asbestos Testing and Sampling

You can't identify asbestos by looking. Laboratory analysis of a sample is the only way to confirm it.

Options

Which kind of testing do you need?

Sampling and bulk analysis

A small piece of the suspect material is taken and analysed in a laboratory to find out whether it contains asbestos and which type. This is the usual first step when you have one or two materials you are unsure about.

A survey

If you need to know about a whole property or all the areas affected by building work, a survey includes inspection, sampling and a report. See our survey guide.

Asbestos surveys explained

Air testing and clearance

Air samples measure fibres in the air. After licensed removal work, an accredited analyst carries out a four-stage clearance before a certificate for reoccupation is issued.

How it works

From sample to result

01

Someone trained takes the sample

HSE recommends a trained and competent person, such as a laboratory analyst or asbestos surveyor, because sampling can release fibres.

02

An accredited lab analyses it

Anyone commissioning analysis must use a laboratory accredited to ISO/IEC 17025. In Great Britain HSE recognises UKAS accreditation.

03

You get a written result

The certificate or report says whether asbestos was detected and, if so, the type. Keep it with your property records.

Good to know

  • Should I take the sample myself? HSE advises using a trained person. Breaking off a piece of a higher-risk material such as insulating board or lagging can release fibres.
  • Is the lab accredited? Search the UKAS directory of accredited organisations.
  • What does it cost? Prices vary by laboratory, how many samples are taken and whether a visit is needed. We haven't found a reliable published range, so ask for a written quote.
  • What if it's positive? It depends on the material and its condition. Asbestos in good condition is often best left in place and checked; damaged material may need sealing, enclosing or removal. Removal options explained.
